Later Life Support | FAQs

  • Q | What support services are available to trans older adults?

Helpful resources and services are available through SAGE, an organization dedicated to LGBTQ+ older adults. The platform SAGEYou→  in particular is designed to foster connection, share trusted resources, and build community among LGBTQ+ older adults. Local organizations like Openhouse→ in San Francisco and the Transcendence support group with Howard Brown Health→ in Chicago also offer support services for trans older adults. Search online for more local or virtual services and support groups for trans older adults.

  • Q | What kind of support would be available for me and for my chosen family at the end of my life?

While there are limited trans-specific resources for people at the end of life, you may benefit from sources of support for the general public. If you have a life-limiting illness, you may choose to receive hospice care. Hospice can support you and your chosen family in many ways including:

    • Weekly or monthly visits to your home from a nurse, a home health aide, a social worker, and a chaplain (if desired)

    • Management of medications to ease pain and other symptoms by a specially trained doctor or nurse practitioner

    • On-call services for help after normal business hours

    • Bereavement support for caregivers and loved ones

See this resource from the Cleveland Clinic→ for more information about hospice care.

For people mourning the loss of a loved one, groups like the Queer Grief Club→ can offer support for coping and healing from grief.
